The ministry called the election a strong recognition of Greece’s global maritime role and its commitment to international maritime law, particularly the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

As a board member, Greece pledges active engagement and expert contribution to the IOC's efforts in protecting the marine environment and oceans, which it described as a "vital common good of humanity."
