Greece Targets Fuel Profiteering
Minister of Development Takis Theodorikakos issued a strong warning against illegal fuel price hikes during a TV interview on Sunday, in light of recent turmoil in the Middle East and its early economic effects, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonia
Calling the regional situation "alarming and dangerous," Theodorikakos stressed the need for de-escalation to avoid further economic fallout. He addressed reports of premature price increases at gas stations before the arrival of higher-priced imports, stating that the Interagency for Market Control (DIMEA) had launched widespread inspections to investigate possible violations of the legal profit margin cap.
He reminded that, until June 30, gas stations are barred from selling fuel at a profit higher than 2021 levels. "Anyone who breaks the law will face serious consequences," he said, with fines reaching up to €5 million.
The minister also announced a forthcoming reform to strengthen market oversight through a new independent Market Supervision and Consumer Protection Authority.
“We will do everything necessary to protect citizens. Profiteering will not be tolerated,” he concluded.
