
PM Unveils University Security Plan
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis presented 11 government interventions to enhance security at state universities during a meeting with rectors at Maximos Mansion on Monday. The focus was on ensuring universities' safe and unhindered operation while respecting academic freedom, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonian
Key interventions include mandatory updates to security plans by July, the creation of disciplinary councils, and new rules allowing suspension of student status if prosecuted. Additionally, universities will fully staff security teams and establish close cooperation with police.
Mitsotakis stressed that students must feel safe, with zero tolerance for violence or intimidation on campuses. He announced that students prosecuted for criminal acts could lose their status for up to 24 months. A deputy prosecutor from the Supreme Court will oversee related cases nationwide.
Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki and other top officials also attended, pledging further efforts to strengthen campus safety. Rectors welcomed the government's support, citing notable progress over the past six years.
