Poland Heads to Run-Off
Poland is heading for a presidential run-off on June 1 after no candidate secured a majority in the first round. Incumbent Rafał Trzaskowski won the most votes, but will face conservative challenger Andrzej Nawrocki, backed by the former ruling Law and Justice party, CE Report quotes PAP
Far-right Confederation candidate Sławomir Mentzen came third with 15.4%, calling it a "historic result" for his party. Other candidates, including far-right Grzegorz Braun and left-wing Adrian Zandberg, trailed with single-digit results. Voter turnout was high at 66.8%.
Trzaskowski urged his supporters to stay mobilized: "We are going for victory." Nawrocki struck a defiant tone, claiming the election was unfair and vowing to be “the president of Poles.”
Prime Minister Donald Tusk called the run-off a battle for Poland’s future, saying, "Not a step back."
