Greece Plans Single-Round Local Elections

The Greek government plans to overhaul local election laws to introduce a single-round voting system, replacing the current two-round format. Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis announced the changes during a radio interview on Friday, stating the aim is to reduce inconvenience for voters and increase turnout, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonian

Marinakis said the reform, set well ahead of the next municipal elections, would give local officials time to adapt. The plan, initially discussed by Interior Minister Theodoros Livanios, will soon enter public consultation.

On national elections, Marinakis ruled out any changes to the electoral law, affirming the government's goal of securing a single-party majority.

He also highlighted police achievements in reducing crime, including dismantling 48 major criminal organizations in five months, and called for a tougher Penal Code. On foreign affairs, he reaffirmed Greece’s commitment to dialogue with Turkiye, noting improvements in migration and airspace issues, while underscoring that Greece will not compromise on sovereignty.
