The European Parliament is set to hold a key debate on the United States and Israel’s military operation against Iran, its consequences, and the need for support for the people of Iran. Tensions in the Middle East following the intervention in Iran will be discussed, as well as the potential consequences for Europe, European Parliament Spokesperson Delphine Colard said in an interview with the Bulgarian News Agency. She expressed confidence that the Parliament will reaffirm its support for the Iranian people.

She recalled that in recent years, the institution has adopted more than 10 resolutions related to Iran, CE Report quotes BTA.

The Iranian people must be able to choose their own government and live a democratic life. However, there are potential consequences for both the energy market and Europe’s security, Colard noted, adding that these topics will also be discussed at the European Council meeting on March 19-20. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola will represent the institution at this meeting.

Colard said that during Wednesday's debate in Strasbourg, there will be calls for how Europe can achieve strategic autonomy and stable energy prices for its citizens.

There are existing mechanisms to ensure better stability. The European Commission is working on measures and discussing the issue with Member States. In terms of security, there are several initiatives to strengthen European defence and security—discussions on border protection, as well as discussions on the protection of Member States, she added.

One situation cannot overshadow another, Colard said regarding continued European support for Ukraine.

Support for Ukraine is very clear. The European Parliament has again backed an additional EUR 90 billion aid package for Ukraine, she said, adding that the commitment to Ukraine’s security remains, as Ukraine’s security is Europe’s security.

The spokesperson said that the awarding of the newly established European Order of Merit to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy demonstrates “the work done for European integration and European values.”

The European Parliament will also vote on a report on the EU enlargement strategy on Wednesday.

Colard pointed out that there were calls for the accession of Western Balkan countries “as soon as possible.” She said that for several years there has been such a commitment from the EU, and the entire enlargement process is based on merit and the fulfilment of criteria.

She recalled that the European Parliament was the first to call for a path to integration and the granting of candidate status to Ukraine.

“There is a clear desire to see how EU enlargement plays a full role in stability, so that our neighbours are part of this stability and part of this democratic union. But there are elements of transition that must take place […] There is also a continued commitment,” Colard noted.
