Greece Declares Ionian EEZ
Greece has officially declared its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Ionian Sea, from the Ionian Islands to Cape Taenaro in the Peloponnese, according to a Presidential Decree published shortly after unveiling its Maritime Spatial Plan, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonian
The decree enshrines the Greece-Italy agreement signed in June 2020 and in force since November 2021. It also affirms Greece’s right to declare similar zones along the rest of its coastline, in line with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (1982). The move reinforces Greece’s position that islands are entitled to maritime zones, including EEZs and continental shelves.
