PAS MPs Meet with Spanish Experts to Tackle Electoral Corruption
Members of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) met with a group of Spanish experts, representatives from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR). The focus of the discussions was on combating electoral corruption, particularly concerning parties deemed unconstitutional, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES
The meeting was held in the context of the parliament's consideration of a draft law aimed at effectively addressing electoral corruption. PAS lawmakers proposed an amendment that would empower authorities to restrict the activities of political formations’ successors declared unconstitutional.
The amendment's rationale highlights concerns over illegal party structures, corrupt influence on candidates, voters, and opinion leaders, which undermine Moldova's constitutional order and rule of law.
Drawing inspiration from Spain, where 16 parties were banned in under a decade through electoral disqualification or direct dissolution, PAS lawmakers seek to apply similar measures in Moldova.
Veronica Rosca, head of the juridical commission for appointments and immunities, thanked the experts for their support and expressed interest in learning from Spain's experience. The draft law on combating electoral corruption passed its first reading last year, and amendments on political party successors will undergo public consultations.
