Greek FM Gerapetritis and US Secretary Rubio Discuss Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington on Friday to discuss ways to enhance Greek-American relations. The 45-minute meeting covered cooperation under the new US administration in areas such as the economy, trade, tourism, energy, and civil society, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonian

Gerapetritis emphasized Europe's commitment to supporting Ukraine despite recent tensions in the Oval Office between President Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He stressed the need for US support in strengthening Europe's defense infrastructure.

Regarding the Middle East, Gerapetritis highlighted the importance of a solution that ensures Israel’s security while also providing a viable future for Palestinians, aiming for long-term regional peace.

The Greek FM also acknowledged the strong presence of the Greek diaspora in the US as a vital link between the two nations.

A State Department announcement reaffirmed Greece’s strategic importance as a NATO ally and regional stabilizer. It praised Greece’s commitment to defense spending and welcomed its upcoming term on the UN Security Council (2025-2026). The discussions also touched on illegal migration and Greece’s leadership in regional energy projects.

Rubio, in a post on X, emphasized the significance of US-Greece cooperation on security, energy, and Greece’s role in the Eastern Mediterranean, reinforcing the strong partnership between the two allies.
