Ukraine’s Parliament Confirms Zelenskyy’s Presidency During Wartime

Politics

Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, has passed a resolution affirming that Volodymyr Zelenskyy will remain president until the end of martial law. The resolution, approved with 268 votes, states that elections will be held once peace is restored, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency

Zelenskyy’s five-year term officially ended in May 2024, but under the Constitution, his presidency continues during wartime. The resolution initially failed on Monday due to opposition from the European Solidarity party, led by former President Petro Poroshenko. However, Poroshenko later announced his faction would no longer block key legislation.

The move comes amid criticism from abroad, with former U.S. President Donald Trump questioning Zelenskyy’s legitimacy and Russian President Vladimir Putin claiming he is avoiding elections to prolong martial law.
