Greek Foreign Minister Visits Syria, Reaffirms Support for Stability

Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis met on Sunday in Damascus with Syria’s interim President Ahmad Al Sharaa and Foreign Minister Asaad Al Shaibani. His visit marks one of the first by a foreign minister from an EU member state to Syria, a country with which Greece shares deep historical and cultural ties, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonian

According to diplomatic sources, Gerapetritis reiterated Greece’s commitment to Syria’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He emphasized the importance of a smooth political transition towards an inclusive government that represents all ethnic and religious communities, free from external interference.

The Greek minister also underscored his country’s strong interest in Syria’s Christian community and highlighted the importance of upholding International Law, including the International Law of the Sea.

Gerapetritis affirmed Greece’s intention to actively participate in shaping Syria’s future, both bilaterally and through the EU and the UN. He stressed the need to rebuild trust between the two nations and reaffirmed Greece’s role as a UN Security Council member in promoting regional stability and prosperity.

As a neighboring EU state, Greece recognizes the strategic importance of the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean and maintains strong ties with the Arab world. Gerapetritis also expressed Greece’s readiness to provide humanitarian aid, support Syria’s development, and share expertise in institution-building.
