Hungarian Democratic Union Leader Calls for Stable Coalition and Common Presidential Candidate

Politics

The President of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR), Kelemen Hunor, has emphasized the urgent need for a stable parliamentary majority and a clear strategy for the upcoming presidential elections. Speaking in an interview with RFI, Hunor outlined his vision for political stability and effective governance following the recent parliamentary elections, CE Report quotes Agerpres

Hunor stressed that the new Parliament should ideally be formed by December 20-21, with a stable majority established soon after. He noted that the coalition formed a week ago, comprising PSD (Social Democratic Party), PNL (National Liberal Party), USR (Save Romania Union), UDMR, and minority groups, appears the most viable on paper, though its functionality remains uncertain. Alternative coalitions, such as those excluding USR or involving different configurations, are also possible, but stability remains the top priority.

The UDMR leader highlighted the importance of a coalition agreement addressing key governance issues, particularly the need for a common candidate for the 2024 presidential elections. He warned that without unity, the coalition risks repeating past mistakes, where multiple candidates from allied parties diluted support.

"The coalition must state clearly whether it will present a common candidate for the presidential elections," Hunor said. He added that the elections should be held by March or early April at the latest, arguing that delays would demonstrate a lack of understanding of recent political challenges.

Hunor described the current coalition option as the "safest" but emphasized the need for consensus among its members, including USR. He also underlined the importance of an effective opposition to maintain balance in the political landscape.

"We need responsible leaders and strong candidates aligned with European values," he stated, ruling out the possibility of a far-right candidate gaining significant traction in the upcoming elections.

Hunor concluded by stressing the coalition's responsibility to ensure governance and stability through the presidential election period, emphasizing the need for unity and strategic planning to avoid political missteps.
