Central Bank official: Talk of lowering monetary policy rate is not on the table at the moment

The discussion about lowering the monetary policy interest rate is not on the table at the moment, as it is too early to declare that the war against inflation has been won, says Cristian Popa, member of the Board of Directors of the National Bank of Romania (BNR). Cereport reports citing Agerpres

"When it comes to the fight we are waging against inflation, I will say it directly: although we have won important victories, and other victories will surely come this year, I cannot say that we have won the whole war against inflation: the war will continue and could be a long one. We will not return soon to the low interest rates of 2 years ago. There are structural changes in the global economy that are creating inflationary pressures," Popa told the International Economic Conference of Sibiu.

The BNR official mentioned that during his most recent press conference, Governor Mugur Isarescu stressed the success of reducing inflation in a prudent manner, without sudden shocks to the economy.
