Duda Pardons Far-Right Activist

Poland

Polish President Andrzej Duda has pardoned Robert Bakiewicz, a far-right activist convicted in 2023 for assaulting elderly leftist protester "Grandma Kasia," the General Prosecutor’s Office confirmed Tuesday. The pardon, granted on July 11, cancels a sentence of one year of community service, a PLN 10,000 (EUR 2,345) compensation payment, and a public announcement of the verdict, CE Report quotes PAP

Justice Minister Adam Bodnar had recently reinstated the sentence after the previous government suspended it during pardon proceedings. The decision sparked backlash.

Government spokesperson Adam Szlapka called the move “outrageous,” accusing Duda of protecting someone “filled with hatred and contempt for state institutions.” Bodnar said the pardon “undermines public trust in justice” and shows Duda’s disregard for constitutional values.
