Estonian Caught with Migrants at Border

Poland

Polish authorities apprehended an Estonian national near the Lithuanian border on Monday for transporting four illegal migrants, likely from Afghanistan, the Border Guard reported, CE Report quotes PAP

The incident came as Poland reinstated temporary border checks with Lithuania and Germany on July 7, citing a surge in illegal migration. The checks, such as those at Budzisko crossing, are said to be running smoothly and only take a few minutes.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that the Afghan migrants had previously attempted to cross from Belarus but were redirected by Belarusian authorities toward Lithuania and Latvia. Speaking alongside Dutch PM Dick Schoof, Tusk said the checks protect the EU’s external border: “We’re doing this for the Germans, the Dutch, the French.”

The European Commission confirmed it had received Poland’s notification of the 30-day checks, which are legal but must be coordinated with the EU and member states. Warsaw continues to accuse Belarus and Russia of orchestrating a migration crisis to destabilize the EU.
