Activists Protest at Turow Mine Excavator

Poland

On Monday morning, several activists climbed onto a massive excavator, towering as high as a 13-story building, at the Turow coal mine. They hung banners featuring Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk's image with messages like "Coal is finished. Prime Minister, take care of people" and "Just transition now!"

The protest aimed to pressure Tusk into setting a closure date for the Turow mine and initiating a regional transformation plan. Activist Malgorzata Lach stated that the people of the region had long been misled about the future of Turow, which is no longer viable due to the high costs of coal energy. She emphasized the need for a shift to renewable energy, which offers a more stable and sustainable solution, CE Report quotes PAP

Police and negotiators were on-site to ensure safety for both protesters and workers. The Turow mine, located near the Czech border, has faced environmental disputes with Prague, leading to a 2022 agreement between Poland and the Czech Republic.
