Another Selfie-Related Gondola Incident Shocks Venice Visitors

Italy

Another gondola capsized this morning in Venice, giving the gondolier and tourists on board an unexpected "bath."

The incident was likely caused by a sudden movement of the passengers—many take advantage of the rides to take selfies or videos on their phones—which unbalanced the classic rowing boat, CE Report quotes ANSA.

Fortunately, the accident happened in an inner canal of the lagoon city, without any risk to those involved. They had to hold onto moored boats or the grates of windows close to the water to get back to shore.

The video quickly went viral on social media.

A similar accident happened in May on the Grand Canal, just a few meters from the Rialto Bridge. On that occasion too, tourists were blamed for shifting their weight to take a selfie, causing the gondola to tip over and the gondolier to fall into the water.

That scene unfolded before the eyes of many tourists crowded along the Riva del Carbon, a central transit area of the city, and was even captured by the city's surveillance cameras.
