For failing to modify an algorithm considered “indifferent” to the fiscal and customs obligations of the European Union, which allegedly resulted in VAT evasion of about €1.2 billion between 2019 and 2021, the Milan Prosecutor’s Office has requested a trial for Amazon EU Sarl, three of its managers, and a fourth U.S.-based executive.

The request for trial, signed by prosecutor Elio Ramondini, is now on the desk of preliminary hearing judge Tiziana Landoni, who must schedule the preliminary hearing, CE Report quotes ANSA.

The investigation, conducted by the Guardia di Finanza, is one of three investigations involving the company founded by Jeff Bezos.

In December, the company reached an agreement with the Agenzia delle Entrate (Italy’s tax authority) and committed to paying €527 million to the Italian tax authorities, including interest.
