Slovenian ministry outlines reasons behind fuel price hike - EXCLUSIVE

Energy

CE Report Media Outlet presents an exclusive interview with the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy of Slovenia, providing insights into the government’s stance on the recent increase in fuel prices, its regulatory approach, and the balance between short-term socio-economic stability and long-term commitments to EU climate and energy policies.

1. What are the main factors behind the current increase in prices of petrol, diesel, and heating oil?

Retail prices of petrol 95, diesel, and heating oil are determined in accordance with the methodology set out in the Regulation on the Formation of Prices for Certain Petroleum Products (Uredba o oblikovanju cen določenih naftnih derivatov, PISRS).

2. Does the government anticipate further price adjustments in the coming months, and what indicators will determine such changes?

The above-mentioned regulation will expire on 16 December 2025.

3. Are there any state support mechanisms or subsidies planned to mitigate the impact of rising fuel costs on households and businesses?

If the question refers to the introduction of ETS2, then we can confirm that the Climate Act has already been adopted, so the government is planning measures to alleviate mobility and energy poverty.

4. How do these price changes align with Slovenia’s broader energy strategy and commitments to EU energy policies?

Regulation of fuel prices mitigates short-term socio-economic challenges. It ensures energy affordability, protects vulnerable groups, and provides a buffer for sectors heavily dependent on fossil fuels. The key challenge is to prevent this regulatory approach from undermining Slovenia’s long-term commitments to reducing transport-related emissions and shifting towards more sustainable mobility solutions.

5. What measures are being considered to ensure long-term stability and predictability of fuel prices for consumers?

As for price regulation, measures are already being implemented.
