Moldova Backs €400M Loan for Energocom

The Moldovan government has granted a state guarantee to Energocom to secure a €400 million loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The move is aimed at ensuring the company can purchase natural gas at favorable prices and strengthen the country’s energy independence, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES

Government spokesperson Daniel Voda emphasized the strategic nature of the decision, especially as Energocom is set to become Moldova’s primary gas supplier from August 1, taking over public service obligations from Moldovagaz.

“This guarantee ensures Energocom can access vital financial resources from the EBRD. Without it, the company would not be able to build strategic reserves for the cold season,” said Voda.

He clarified that the loan will be disbursed in installments based on actual needs to avoid over-indebtedness and stressed that the process was transparent, legal, and free of hidden interests.

Voda also reassured the public that the payment obligation by the state would only apply in the unlikely event that Energocom fails to meet its repayment terms, a scenario deemed highly improbable by financial experts and the EBRD.

The funds will be used under the “Strengthening the Energy Security of Moldova” project to guarantee continuous gas and electricity supply for citizens.
