Bulgaria Needs Four Reactors

Energy

Bulgaria should maintain at least four operational nuclear reactors, according to Bogomil Manchev, Chairman of the Bulgarian Atomic Forum (Bulatom), during an international nuclear energy conference near Varna, CE Report quotes BTA

Manchev emphasized that in addition to Kozloduy Units 7 and 8, the dormant Belene project must be revived, as Kozloduy Units 5 and 6 will be decommissioned by 2051. He warned that relying on thermal power plants is risky, given private operators’ profit-driven limitations.

He noted that the Belene reactors’ steel is of high quality and could last 50 years, with system upgrades meeting modern standards. Manchev also supported the use of small modular reactors and the ongoing expansion of renewables.

To secure long-term energy demand, he urged the state to attract major data center companies as potential nuclear investors, ensuring reliable electricity and stable consumption.
