Timothée Chalamet won the Critics Choice Award for Best Actor on Sunday for his role in “Marty Supreme,” at the ceremony that marks the start of this year’s Hollywood awards season, AFP reported.

He notably defeated Leonardo DiCaprio, whose thriller “One Battle After Another” won the awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.

The French-American actor is leading a highly successful campaign for “Marty Supreme,” directed by Josh Safdie, in which he plays a 1950s table tennis champion consumed by his ambitions.

“Josh, you created the story of an imperfect man with a dream we can all relate to,” Chalamet said. “And you didn’t lecture audiences about right and wrong, and I think we should all tell stories like that, so thank you for this dream,” he added.

At 30, Timothée Chalamet has never hidden his ambition to win multiple Academy Awards. He is now among the favorites for the Oscars ceremony scheduled for March 15.

With his victory at the Critics Choice Awards, decided by professional critics, his chances at the Oscars—voted on by film industry professionals—could increase.

This year, the ceremony took place on the first weekend of the year, which traditionally marks the opening of awards season and is usually occupied by the Golden Globes. The Golden Globes will be held in Beverly Hills on January 11.

Jessie Buckley won the award for Best Actress on Sunday for her role as William Shakespeare’s wife in the historical drama “Hamnet.”

As reported by CE Report, Jimmy Kimmel, winner of Best Talk Show, used the ceremony to joke about his conflict last year with U.S. President Donald Trump, which led to the temporary suspension of his show. “Thank you, Mr. President, for all the ridiculous things you do every day,” he joked.
