Star Wars becomes most valuable film poster ever sold
The poster created in 1977 by artist and poster designer Tom Jung using acrylic and airbrush techniques has been offered for sale at the Heritage Auctions auction house in the United States.
The iconic poster, which was exhibited two weeks before the film’s release and received widespread acclaim, was sold at auction for $3.875 million, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.
As a result, the poster—originally listed with a starting price of $1 million—became the most expensive artwork from the Star Wars franchise and the most valuable film poster in the history of the movie industry. The previous record belonged to Darth Vader’s lightsaber from the Star Wars films, which sold for $3.6 million.
It was reported that the poster had been hanging in producer Gary Kurtz’s office and was later put up for sale by his family.
The poster features a composition in which Luke Skywalker raises his lightsaber into the air, with Princess Leia behind him and the silhouette of Darth Vader looming above them. On the reverse side, the artwork depicts X-wing fighters launching an attack, along with a scene showing Han Solo and Skywalker receiving medals.
Officials from Heritage Auctions noted that the piece is not only a film collectible but also an important part of American pop culture, adding that the global fan base of the Star Wars franchise played a key role in driving up the sale price.
