
Venice Film Festival star makes impressive debut
The horror film The Conjuring: The Final Rite by Michael Chaves, the ninth installment of the franchise starring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, has climbed back to the top of the Italian box office, according to Cinetel data, grossing €630,470 in one week (€8,556,011 in total since its release three weeks ago), CE Report quotes ANSA.
Slipping into second place, after debuting at number one a week ago, is the hit anime Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Infinity Castle (still leading in the U.S.) with €559,319 and a total of €3,901,264.
In third place remains another anime masterpiece, back in theaters for a special event release 27 years after its debut: the dramatic and moving Grave of the Fireflies by Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata. In four days, it grossed €314,833.
Dropping to fourth is Material Love (Materialists) by Celine Song, starring Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans, which has become the first independent film in 2025 to surpass $100 million worldwide. It continues to hold up well in Italy, earning €283,795 this week for a total of €2,126,111 in three weeks.
Debuting in fifth place is Duse by Pietro Marcello, one of the films in competition at this year’s Venice Film Festival, with Valeria Bruni Tedeschi as the divine Eleonora Duse: in five days, it grossed €265,099.
In sixth place, another new entry: The Life of Chuck by Mike Flanagan, based on the Stephen King story and starring Tom Hiddleston, earning €226,897 in four days.
Falling three spots to seventh is Downton Abbey – The Grand Finale, the concluding chapter of the family saga born as a TV series, which grossed €195,875 last week.
At number eight is the debut of horror The Valley of Smiles by Paolo Strippoli, starring Michele Riondino, with €155,011 in five days.
Dropping from fifth to ninth is The Smurfs – The Movie, a new animated version of the blue characters, with €109,253 last week.
Closing the top ten is another event release: David Gilmour Live at Circus Maximus, a concert movie capturing the musician’s six sold-out shows in Rome in 2024, which grossed €101,820 in four days.
Overall, the weekend box office totaled €4,755,625, a 13% increase compared to the previous week’s €4,213,417.
