Videnova: Bulgarian Ceramic Art Needs Support to Thrive
Dr. Elena Videnova, artist, ceramicist, and secretary of the Ceramics section of the Union of Bulgarian Artists, says ceramic art in Bulgaria is still in its early stages of development. In an interview with BTA, she described ceramics as “a boundless universe,” emphasizing the need for greater public understanding, state support, and patronage, CE Report quotes BTA
Videnova is the key figure behind the Festival of Contemporary Bulgarian Ceramics, which has been a traveling exhibition since 2024. However, she lamented the lack of opportunities for Bulgarian ceramicists to present their work abroad due to a scarcity of patrons and the absence of educational programs focused on art marketing.
“It’s incredibly difficult for young artists to continue in ceramics,” she said, pointing to the high cost of equipment and minimal income prospects. She stressed the need to create supportive conditions or risk making their education “pointless.”
Videnova criticized the lack of a Museum of Contemporary Applied Arts in Bulgaria and called for state action to preserve national ceramic traditions, such as Busintsi and Troyan. She also expressed hope that the ceramics festival will grow into an international platform for diverse artistic voices.
Despite challenges, Videnova urged young artists not to give up. “Every artist is a universe,” she said. “From each small seed, something incredible can grow.”
