The occasion also celebrated the 175th anniversary of poet Mihai Eminescu's birth. In recognition of his lasting contribution to national and universal culture, 2025 has been declared "The Eminescu Year," following an initiative by the Romanian Academy and the Science Academy of Moldova.

President Iohannis called for reflection on Romania's development path, stressing commitments to European ideals, partnerships, and future generations. He quoted Eminescu's words, "If you want to see a nation's level of general culture, you need to see its idols," urging society to uphold authentic values like education, integrity, and responsibility.

He highlighted culture’s role as a unifying force in Romania’s history, inspiring resilience during key moments such as post-war recovery and resistance to dictatorship. The President also noted Romania’s rich cultural diversity and internationally recognized creative potential, crediting figures like Mihai Eminescu and George Enescu for embedding Romanian identity within universal values.

“The events of 'The Eminescu Year' will showcase his timeless poetry and his vision of patriotism. Today, creators and cultural institutions must unite to make culture a cornerstone of Romania's renaissance,” concluded Iohannis, wishing a happy National Culture Day to all.
