Tehran activates air defenses amid US-Iran tensions

Tehran activated its air defense systems to counter drones and small aircraft, amid heightened tensions marking 60 days since the start of the conflict between Iran and the United States.

According to Iranian agencies Tasnim News Agency and Fars News Agency, the systems were activated to respond to potential aerial threats, although it remains unclear whether this was a real incident or a drill. The air defense activity lasted around 20 minutes before the situation returned to normal, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES.

The context is sensitive: Friday, May 1, marks the 60-day deadline since the outbreak of hostilities. Under U.S. law, President Donald Trump would need to seek Congressional approval to continue military intervention. However, the administration has suggested this requirement could be bypassed, citing the ceasefire established on April 8.

U.S. officials say active hostilities ended in early April, with no direct exchanges of fire since then. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that under these conditions, the 60-day “clock” is effectively paused.

The conflict, which began on February 28, has had significant economic consequences. A blockade imposed by the United States on Iranian ports—following Tehran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz—has contributed to a surge in global oil prices, reaching their highest levels in the past four years.
