Rome Court Acquits Climate Activists Over Trevi Fountain Protest

Climate

The single-judge court of Rome, presided over by Judge Alfonso Sabella, has acquitted nine Ultima Generazione (Last Generation) activists who, in May 2023, poured black liquid—vegetable charcoal—into the Trevi Fountain, CE Report quotes ANSA.

The Rome Prosecutor's Office, which also requested acquittal, had charged them under Article 518-duodecies concerning the “deterioration, defacement, soiling, and unlawful use of cultural or landscape assets.”

The charges were dropped with the ruling that “the act did not occur,” and for the first charge, the court recognized the “particular insignificance of the act.”
