Croatian Motorways (HAC) denied a German media report that a new toll collection system would be introduced this autumn, saying it is scheduled to go live on 1 March 2027.

HAC said preparatory and infrastructure work is underway, but described the project as technically and organisationally complex, involving several phases.

The new system, Crolibertas, aims to remove toll booths and enable free-flow traffic without stopping, CE Report quotes HINA.

Drivers of light vehicles will be able to choose between an upgraded ENC device or automatic number plate recognition (ALPR), which requires prior registration and card-linked payment. ENC devices will be mandatory for heavy vehicles.

Cash payments and toll booths will be abolished, with enforcement carried out via mobile units and roadside camera portals.

The system will cover Croatia’s entire motorway network, including sections operated by concessionaires, introducing a unified tolling system nationwide.
