Greece, U.S. strengthen ties in shipbuilding and shipping sectors
The United States Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle was welcomed on Tuesday by Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Vassilis Kikilias at the ministry's headquarters.
The meeting focused on deepening strategic cooperation between Greece and the United States in the shipbuilding and shipping sectors, reflecting the leading role of Greek-owned shipping in the global commercial fleet, according to an official statement from the Ministry, CE Report quotes ANA-MPA.
According to Kikilias, the cooperation between the two countries will focus on port infrastructure, US investments in Greece's ports, maritime agreements, and security issues. He also noted that Greece has long been a strong partner of the United States in many sectors, but shipping stands out because of its vital role in ensuring the stability and growth of global trade.
"Greece's continued contributions to the global maritime sector ensure that its crucial role as a regional and global hub will continue to grow and be further enhanced in the years ahead," he noted.
Guilfoyle stressed that President Trump issued his executive order to revive America's maritime dominance early in his administration, underscoring the importance he attaches to this sector. She also noted that this executive order includes working with allies to strengthen the United States' shipbuilding capacity, and Greece and Greek companies have answered this call.
Kikilias and Guilfoil also visited the vessel Hellas Liberty at the port of Piraeus. Built in the United States during World War II, the ship now serves as a floating museum celebrating Greek maritime history.
