Greek Environment & Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou welcomed European Commissioner Dan Jørgensen, Energy Community Director Artur Lorkowski, and ministers from 10 treaty member states. Papastavrou praised the bloc’s progress in moving away from Russian gas but emphasized that significant work remains in closing gaps in the electricity sector.
Commissioner Jørgensen condemned Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and reiterated the EU’s commitment to cutting off energy ties with Moscow, including a proposed ban on Russian natural gas imports.
Lorkowski highlighted Greece’s strategic role as a gateway to the LNG market and Europe’s unified electricity system, stressing the need for close cooperation on renewables, pricing, and emissions.
The Energy Community, founded in 2005, aims to build a unified regional energy market between the EU and partner countries.
