Bulgaria rated free in 2025 freedom house report
Bulgaria is rated Free in the Washington non-profit organization Freedom House annual report on freedom for 2025, published on their website on Thursday. The organization alerted that global freedom has declined for the 20th consecutive year in 2025.
Countries in the report were divided into three categories: from Not Free and Partly Free to Free, following a scale from 0 to 100. Bulgaria was rated Free with 74 points score and a 3-point decline. Among countries rated Free, the United States, Bulgaria, and Italy have experienced the year’s largest declines, CE Report quotes BTA.
According to the survey, multiple parties compete in Bulgaria’s democratic system, and there have been several transfers of power between rival parties in recent decades. The country continues to struggle with issues including political corruption, organized crime, media freedom, and discrimination against ethnic minorities.
Bulgaria's political rights are rated 30 out of 40, while civil liberties 44 out of 60.
A total of 54 countries experienced deterioration in their political rights and civil liberties, while only 35 countries registered improvements. The largest declines in freedom for the calendar year were caused by military coups and efforts by incumbent leaders to crush peaceful dissent or change constitutional rules in their favor, the report read. Out of the 87 countries rated Free in 2005, a total of 76, more than 85%, remained Free throughout the two-decade period of global decline.
The only country with 100 points score is Finland and the only one scored 0 is Sudan.
