Trial of Ex-PM Petkov Over Borissov Arrest Delayed

Bulgaria

The case against former Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkov, co-leader of the Continue the Change Coalition, for allegedly exceeding his authority by ordering the arrest of his predecessor Boyko Borissov on March 17, 2022, will proceed under a fast-track procedure without an admission of guilt, CE Report quotes BTA

The Sofia City Court postponed the first hearing until the end of September to allow Petkov’s defense more time to review the case files. Only a few witnesses will testify in court, with much of the evidence coming from prior investigations.

Petkov denies the charges, which accuse him of unlawfully ordering police officials to act against the law. The arrest of Borissov, former finance minister Vladislav Goranov, and advisor Sevdelina Arnaudova was related to an extortion probe but they were released after 24 hours without charges. Bulgarian courts later ruled the arrests illegal due to lack of evidence.
