Terziev: Sofia Is a Cause, Not a Deal

Bulgaria

Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and reform in a Facebook post on Wednesday, declaring that he was elected to break from corrupt practices, not make backroom deals. "I was elected to stop uncontrolled spending, end old schemes, and restore trust," he wrote, CE Report quotes BTA

Terziev said he faces strong resistance in the Sofia Municipal Council due to his refusal to align with powerful political figures and shadowy interests. “When you don’t call Borissov, don’t ask Peevski, and don’t belong to circles of the old model, the system fights back,” he stated, citing pressure from unions, institutions, and media.

He pledged that any future council majority would be built on principles, not transactions: “Sofia is not a deal. Sofia is a cause.”

The post follows criticism by Continue the Change's Kiril Petkov, who accused GERB leader Boyko Borissov of distributing BGN 15 million in government funds without accountability. Borissov replied that the mayor could return the money if he didn’t want it.

The funds, allocated after a six-day public transport strike, helped end the blockade. Although Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova had previously denied the availability of such funds, the cabinet approved the transfer following public pressure and Borissov’s unofficial intervention.
