PM Rejects Euro Referendum

Bulgaria

Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov has criticized President Rumen Radev's proposal for a 2026 euro adoption referendum, calling it unconstitutional and in violation of both national and EU laws. Radev suggested asking Bulgarians, “Do you agree to have Bulgaria adopt the single European currency euro in 2026?” and is expected to submit the question to Parliament, CE Report quotes BTA

Zhelyazkov urged lawmakers to reject the proposal and called on the President to reconsider, warning that the move could undermine upcoming EU convergence assessments critical for Bulgaria’s planned eurozone entry in 2026. He questioned the President’s motives, suggesting the initiative aims to destabilize public trust and delay eurozone accession.
