Vazrazhdane MP Detained, Two Hospitalized Amid Protests in Sofia

Bulgaria

One MP from Bulgaria’s Vazrazhdane party has been detained, while two others were hospitalized following clashes with police, MP Tsoncho Ganev told journalists, CE Report quotes BTA

Ganev identified the detained MP as Ivaylo Chorbov, while Angel Georgiev and Nikola Dimitrov were taken to ISUL University Hospital. He accused the government of using force against their protest, stating, "Once again, we are beaten and sprayed with gas."

The protest was against Bulgaria’s Euro-Atlantic policies and the rejection of a referendum on eurozone membership. "A total of 604,000 people want a referendum, but the Euro-Atlantic parties have destroyed democratic possibilities," Ganev said, calling for the government's resignation.

Tensions escalated on Saturday in front of the European Commission’s office in Sofia when anti-euro protesters threw red paint and set fire to the building’s door. Six people were arrested, and 10 police officers were injured.
