Bulgaria to Receive First F-16 Block 70 Jets This Year

Bulgaria

Bulgaria's first two F-16 Block 70 fighter jets will arrive between March and April, with three more expected mid-year and another three by September, bringing the total to eight in 2024, Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov told Nova TV. One aircraft will remain in the U.S. for technician training, while the other two will be delivered to Bulgaria, CE Report quotes BTA

Zapryanov called this a historic moment, marking the arrival of modern Western-designed combat aircraft. Bulgarian pilots and technicians, who have trained in the U.S. for nearly two years, are highly motivated to begin operations. He expressed confidence in a smooth transition to using the new jets.

The minister confirmed that the infrastructure is ready to receive the aircraft, with an American team verifying the necessary sites for certification. Bulgaria's first F-16 Block 70 was officially received at Lockheed Martin's Greenville facility on January 31, according to a government statement.

Regarding Bulgaria's NATO membership, Zapryanov emphasized its role in ensuring national security and territorial integrity. He noted increased interest in military careers due to improved security and rising salaries in the defence sector.

Commenting on a recent drone incident near Sofia Airport, which caused flight delays, Zapryanov highlighted the need for legislative changes. He proposed forming a working group to establish procedures for handling such incidents, with new regulations expected within three to four months.
