Minister Gutsanov Assures Support for Gas Explosion Victims and Addresses Budget Challenges

Bulgaria

Minister of Labour and Social Policy Borislav Gutsanov announced on Bulgarian National Television that the Ministry will provide necessary assistance to victims of the Bankya gas explosion who meet eligibility criteria, CE Report quotes BTA

Addressing the state budget deficit of approximately BGN 18 billion, Gutsanov emphasized that solutions are being sought. He reassured citizens that social payments would remain unaffected despite the deficit, which largely stems from a BGN 10 billion pension increase and higher salaries in the Defence and Interior Ministries. Taxes will not be raised, he confirmed.

Gutsanov noted that the fiscal reserve stands at BGN 9.2 billion, above the minimum required BGN 4.2 billion. He assured that if funds are drawn from the reserve, the amount will be minimal.

To combat the demographic crisis, the Minister discussed potential tax relief for families with one or two children and proposed programs to support young families in purchasing their first home or car.

On Bulgaria's eurozone entry, Gutsanov defended the government’s decision not to request a convergence report yet, stressing the need for readiness and a finalized budget. He highlighted the importance of curbing inflation and avoiding social unrest, emphasizing that the government’s complex composition could be an asset in navigating these challenges.
