FIBA lifts restrictions on Russian, Belarusian players, coaches, officials

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has lifted restrictions imposed on Russian and Belarusian players, coaches and officials.

According to FIBA, the lifting of the restrictions will initially apply to players, coaches and referees from Russia and Belarus, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.

A decision on whether Russian and Belarusian national teams and clubs will be allowed to compete in international competitions will be made in December.

FIBA suspended the participation of Russian and Belarusian teams and officials in its competitions following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.

On March 1, 2022, FIBA decided not to allow Russian teams and officials to participate in FIBA basketball and 3x3 competitions, with the decision confirmed by its Central Board on March 25, 2022.

In May 2022, FIBA formally withdrew Russian and Belarusian teams from several international competitions, including the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup European Qualifiers.
