Fernández bids emotional farewell to Messi

Messi recently confirmed his permanent retirement from international football at the age of 39. The legendary forward ended his career with Argentina after they reached the 2026 World Cup final against Spain.

In response, Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández took to Instagram to pay tribute to his departing captain. The 25-year-old reflected on a deeply personal journey that saw him go from an anxious young supporter to Messi’s teammate and a World Cup winner, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

Fernández recalled his early fear of losing the chance to play alongside his hero, referring to Messi’s brief international retirement in 2016.

“Leo, when you previously said you were going to retire from playing for the national team, I felt deeply saddened,” he wrote.

The midfielder explained how, as a young player, he obsessively kept track of their age difference, until the dream he had eventually came true in spectacular fashion in Qatar.

Fernández also praised Messi’s humility and leadership behind the scenes. Looking ahead to a new chapter for the national team, Fernández admitted that Messi’s absence would be difficult to cope with.

In the end, Fernández thanked Messi for everything he had learned from him throughout his journey.

“How lucky I was, Leo, and how lucky that boy was — the one who counted the years without knowing whether the day would ever come. Thank you for treating me that way, for everything you taught me and for allowing me to be part of your story... we will miss you so much, captain,” Fernández concluded.

Messi’s decision was reportedly reinforced following the tragic death of his father, Jorge, in early August.
