Croatia's tennis star withdraws from US Open

Marin Čilić, the 37-year-old Croatian tennis player, has withdrawn from the US Open, the final Grand Slam tournament of the year, which began on Sunday.

Čilić withdrew from the tournament due to an injury, according to the tournament organizers, although the exact nature of the injury has not yet been disclosed, CE Report quotes HINA.

In the first round, Čilić was scheduled to face Russian player Andrey Rublev, the No. 23 seed. His place in the draw will now be taken by Finnish player Otto Virtanen, who entered the main draw as a lucky loser.

New York has been the scene of Čilić’s greatest career success. He won the US Open in 2014, claiming the only Grand Slam title of his career. He also reached two other Grand Slam finals, at Wimbledon in 2017 and the Australian Open in 2018.
