Romanian Tennis Players Advance to Second Round of Australian Open Women’s Doubles

Romanian tennis stars Gabriela Ruse and Jaqueline Cristian, competing in different pairs, have advanced to the second round of the Australian Open women's doubles event following their victories on Friday in Melbourne, CE Report quotes Agerpres

Ruse and her Ukrainian partner Marta Kostiuk triumphed over Australians Destanee Aiava and Maddison Inglis with a score of 6-4, 7-6 (7/2) in a match lasting 1 hour and 43 minutes. The duo, with two previous Grand Slam semifinal appearances—at the Australian Open 2023 and Roland Garros 2024—will face the sixth-seeded team of Elise Mertens (Belgium) and Ellen Perez (Australia) in the next round.

Jaqueline Cristian, paired with Italy’s Camilla Rosatello, secured a hard-fought victory against Cristina Bucsa (Spain) and Iana Sizikova (Russia), winning 6-2, 6-7 (2/7), 6-4 in 2 hours and 15 minutes. They will meet the 16th-seeded team of Leylah Fernandez (Canada) and Nadia Kichenok (Ukraine) in the second round.

However, Monica Niculescu and American Sofia Kenin were eliminated in the first round, losing to Japan’s Miyu Kato and Mexico’s Renata Zarazua 6-4, 6-4 after 1 hour and 38 minutes of play.

The competition continues to heat up as the Romanian players aim for further success in the first Grand Slam of the year.
