Albanian PM says Zvërnec project hasn't yet started

Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama spoke in an interview with “Channel 4”, a major UK television broadcaster, responding to questions about the proposed investment in Zvërnec.

Rama said the British broadcaster that no project had yet been launched in Zvërnec, adding that “including Sazan in the discussion is completely unnecessary, as there is currently no project or agreement concerning Sazan.”

The Prime Minister said in the Channel 4 interview that the project would fit with EU directives, CE Report quotes ATA.

In an interview with Channel 4, Prime Minister Edi Rama said the ongoing protests reflected higher public expectations rather than disagreement over facts, describing them as a sign of social progress. Asked about the Sazan and Zvërnec projects, he said no project had started in Zvërnec and that there was currently no project or agreement concerning Sazan. He rejected linking Sazan to the wider debate, saying its inclusion was unnecessary.

Rama said Sazan currently has no project or agreement and that linking it to the Zvërnec development was unnecessary.

He said the plans shared on Instagram were only a teaser and that the project had since evolved, involving internationally recognised architects and landscape designers specialising in wetlands. He added that an independent environmental impact assessment was being conducted and insisted the aim was to regenerate the area rather than brutalize it.

Responding to concerns from the European Commission about environmental standards and strategic investment rules, Rama said any project must comply with EU standards. He urged critics to focus on facts rather than portraying the development as a catastrophe, and said the protests had provided an opportunity for reflection on areas requiring improvement.
