Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has acknowledged defeat in the parliamentary elections to opposition leader Peter Magyar, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.

“It is painful for us, but it is clear that we have not been entrusted with the responsibility or the opportunity to govern. I have congratulated the winning party,” Orban said, as quoted by MTI.

He added that he had never worked so hard in an election campaign.

Orban also noted that 2.5 million Hungarians placed their trust in his party, Fidesz, and voted for it.

“Whatever happens, we will serve the nation even in opposition,” Orban told his supporters on Sunday evening in Budapest. “The task is clear: now that the burden of governing is no longer on our shoulders, we must strengthen our own community,” he added.

The Hungarian prime minister also expressed special thanks to voters abroad who supported Fidesz.

“We have a message beyond the borders: you can continue to count on us,” Orban said.
