Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Tejero, who led the failed coup d’état of February 23, 1981 in Spain’s Parliament, has died at the age of 93 at his home in Valencia, according to family sources cited by Spanish media including El Mundo, CE Report quotes ANSA.

Tejero, then a member of the Spanish Civil Guard, spearheaded the attempted coup by storming the Congress of Deputies with armed officers, firing shots as lawmakers dove for cover under their benches.
