Greece to End Conscription in Navy, Air Force by 2026

Politics

Starting January 1, 2026, Greece will no longer use conscripts in the Navy and Air Force, with all mandatory service shifting to the Army, Defence Minister Nikos Dendias announced during a press conference on the Armed Forces' “Agenda 2030” reforms. A new training program for conscripts will be unveiled in September, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonia

Conscripts’ monthly compensation will rise from €8.80 to €50, and up to €100 for those serving in border areas, also starting in 2026.

Dendias highlighted reforms aimed at greater efficiency, including merging 45 more military bases—adding to 137 already consolidated—and reducing military courts from 15 to 6. These moves are expected to save over €100 million annually.
