Merz Backs Dan's Pro-European Vision in Berlin Talks
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz praised Romanian President Nicușor Dan during his official visit to Berlin on Friday, commending his pro-European stance demonstrated in the recent presidential election, CE Report quotes AGERPRES
"In your campaign, you sent a strong signal for a democratic, European Romania — one that resonated beyond your borders," Merz said during a joint press conference at the Federal Chancellery.
Highlighting close bilateral ties, Merz noted that the countries’ foreign ministers recently signed an action plan to deepen cooperation in defense, economic policy, education, and cultural exchange.
"Our economic relations are a success story," Merz added, citing record bilateral trade of over €42 billion last year. He emphasized Germany's continued investment in Romania, particularly in energy and industry.
On EU matters, Merz stated Germany would oppose the European Commission's proposed budget increase but supports its reform priorities.
The leaders also discussed security cooperation within NATO, joint efforts to support Ukraine against Russian aggression, and their coordinated approach to stabilizing Moldova and strengthening its EU ties.
Dan also met with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier earlier in the day at Bellevue Palace.
