Merz Urges Gaza Ceasefire

Politics

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Friday renewed criticism of Israel's military actions in Gaza, calling for an immediate ceasefire and expanded humanitarian aid.

Speaking in Berlin, Merz said the situation in Gaza “is no longer acceptable” and stressed the need for unimpeded aid access. He noted ongoing talks with European leaders, including the UK’s Keir Starmer and France’s Emmanuel Macron, to push for a ceasefire, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency

Merz said he had also conveyed his concerns directly to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“We support Israel, but we must speak clearly about what cannot be tolerated,” he said.

Since 2023, nearly 59,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, with over 100,000 wounded. Israel is currently facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice.
