NATO Urges Calm After Israel-Iran Strikes
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has called on allies, including the United States, to urgently work toward de-escalating tensions in the Middle East following Israel’s latest airstrikes on Iran, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency
Speaking at a joint press conference with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Rutte described the situation as “rapidly evolving” and emphasized the importance of diplomacy. He noted Israel acted unilaterally and stressed that efforts to prevent further escalation are already underway.
Downplaying fears of nuclear escalation, Rutte said, “No, we are not close,” and reaffirmed NATO’s commitment to reducing tensions.
According to Iranian media, Israeli strikes early Friday targeted military, nuclear, and residential sites. Israel claimed 200 fighter jets were involved, dropping over 300 munitions. In response, Iran launched more than 100 drones at Israeli targets.
Israel confirmed the assassination of several top Iranian commanders, including IRGC chief Hossein Salami and military Chief of Staff Mohammad Bagheri. Both nations are reportedly preparing for further military actions.
