MPs Honor Victims of Stalinist Deportations

Politics

Moldovan MPs commemorated the victims of the Stalinist deportations of June 12–13, 1941, during a plenary session. Speaker Igor Grosu stressed the importance of historical memory and the duty to prevent such atrocities from recurring, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES

“Over 30,000 people were taken from their homes, many never returned. It is our responsibility to ensure no regime commits such crimes again,” Grosu stated.

He also announced that the National Archives Agency has received around 20,000 new files of Soviet-era deportees. These records, part of an initiative begun in 2010, will soon be searchable online.

Lawmakers observed a minute of silence to honor the victims—mainly kulaks, priests, intellectuals, and officials—who were deported from Bessarabia and northern Bukovina to Siberia and Kazakhstan, often under brutal conditions.
